The event showcased the dedication of the next generation of Jains (ages 3-17) who attend the Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington’s Pathshala (Sunday School). They demonstrated their profound understanding of Jainism through music, drama, and speeches. The cultural program featured over two hours of captivating dances and skits by several Pathshala students and adults alike. The celebration culminated in a special Jain dinner, known for its pure vegetarian offerings that exclude any root vegetables.
Lord Mahavir, the twenty-fourth Tirthankara (ford-maker and propagator), was born in the 6th century BCE. He revitalized and reorganized the Jain religion, embodying the path of enlightenment and liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth.
Vishal Mehta, President of JSMW, and Dr. Gita Shah, Chairwoman, extended a warm welcome to the audience and introduced the leaders of the Jain Society. The event was graced by the presence of Jain leaders, BAPS leaders, JSMW supporters, representatives from the Embassy of India, and political dignitaries. Rahul Jain, the JSMW Director of Public Relations, remarked, “JSMW and the Jain Community in the DC region are thriving. JSMW is constructing a magnificent new Jain temple near the White House, in Prince George’s County. The attendance of County Executive, Ms. Angela Alsobrooks, Mr. Jigar Rawal from the Embassy of India, and numerous other distinguished guests at the event exemplifies their steadfast support and dedication to our community.”
Alongside the festivities, JSMW members generously supported the construction of JSMW’s new temple, which is being built in Beltsville, MD, contributing over $250,000 in total. Additionally, five senior JSMW members were honored at the event with Governor’s citations from the State of Maryland for their exceptional service to the community: Mr. Kanaiyalal Doshi, Mr. Kantilal Gangar, Mr. Arvind Shah, Dr. Gita Shah, and Mr. Pravin Dand.
The founders of the Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington established the temple in 1980 with the objective of promoting better understanding and following of Jain principles, preserving our rich heritage, and passing it on to future generations. From the initial membership of 20 families in 1980, Jain Society membership has grown to nearly 650 families and has remained a cohesive, harmonized society. The current Jain Center is located in Silver Spring, MD and the new Jain Center is being planned on nearly 5.5 acres in Beltsville, MD.
